Teacher Statement
Photography begins with a need to explore and a desire to discover.

My goal for my students; to awaken the possibilities, through photography, of a new way of seeing. A new view of the world revealed through photography. The second goal is to help students acquire the necessary craft (technique) steps to communicate what their visual search has revealed.

If it is fair to say that photography is not brain surgery, nor does it require a lot of equipment, as is witnessed through the early work of the masters of photography ( look at the work of Paul Strand, Eugene Smith, Harry Callahan, or Ansel Adams) - then why all the talk about equipment and the continual emphasis put on the “craft (technique)?” Simply, it’s a lot easier to talk about “how” (technique) the photograph was made, rather than the “why” (intent) and "what" (content) of a photograph.

My classes and workshops will strive to expand student’s visual awareness (the art of seeing) as well as develop the student’s craft (technique) skills including the use of the three camera controls (the shutter, aperture, and focus), understanding exposure and recognizing how light affects your photograph, using filters and other accessories to affect the photograph, compositional elements common to all good photography, and, finally, understanding the computer and Adobe Photo Shop so that you can produce an accurate print of what you saw when making the photograph.

And finally, to make students aware that we stand on the shoulders of giants. Individuals that fought for and revealed photography as an art form and brought us to the place where photography is today. We need to look at the work of past photographers so we can understand the foundation we stand on.

This journey is a lot of fun, there’s no other way to look at it!
